Belleville, IL For years, the chain-run Ritz (opened around 1930) co-existed with the independent Lincoln Theater, just a few blocks away. They both subdivided their interiors into three screening rooms, and they could have probably done better business if they'd made an effort not to book the same films at the same time! As it was, the Ritz did poorly enough that the owner of the Lincoln was able to persuade the chain to sell it. He then sold it to a church. The huge RITZ sign was purchased by a St. Louis entrepreneur who wanted to place it on the facade of his bar on Washington Avenue--which he had named the Ritz just so he could use this particular sign. He ran into trouble with zoning ordinances, and the sign was never used. Wonder where it is now.
I bought that hat yesterday and at one point had a Coke... who wouldn't have taken a picture?
